A Gothic Construction Site

The architectural masterpieces of the Gothic era still fascinate us today. To mark the 500th anniversary of the consecration of the Minster choir, the Augustinermuseum and the Freiburg Münsterbauverein are mounting a joint exhibition which takes a look back in time, examining how buildings were constructed during the Middle Ages.

How did people build churches in those days? How did they work with stone, glass and wood at that time? This exhibition brings the building activity of the Middle Ages to life in all its facets.

The Augustinermuseum, the Münsterbauhütte, the Minster and the Museum of City History are all integrated into the project and feature as venues. The exhibition hall in the Augustinermuseum serves as the starting point: here you can discover everything about the planning, organisation, financing and technical realisation of the Minster as well as its function as a centre of faith and its day-to-day life. The Museum of City History highlights the Minster’s role as a trademark and advertising medium, from the 16th century to the present day. Information boards in the Minster choir explore today’s building activities.
