Mundenhof Animal enclosures

The animal enclosures

The animal enclosures have been in existence since 1968. Many of the predators and wild animals kept at that time are no longer here because they were difficult to keep in captivity in a manner appropriate for the species. At the Mundenhof you will thus mainly find breeds of domestic animals and livestock, kept by humans for hundreds of years, from all over the world. You can therefore compare species of cows from a variety of continents or the various representatives of the camel family. Many of these regional domestic animals and livestock have become endangered because they have been replaced by international breeds. Here at the Mundenhof, however, you can experience the advantages of the old breeds.

Accompany us on a tour of the animal enclosures:
every enclosure at the Mundenhof stands for a particular country or even a continent. From Europe, the journey continues to North America, South America, Asia and Africa. The tour finishes with the Exotic Centre consisting of bears, two types of monkey, meerkats and the aviary.
The Aquarium run by the Verein der Aquarien- und Terrarienfreunde Freiburg [Freiburg Association of Aquarium and Terrarium Enthusiasts] offers an attraction of a totally different kind and a lively contrast to the open enclosures.

Feeding strictly prohibited!

Our animals eat almost everything that humans give them. Visitors are strictly forbidden to feed the Mundenhof animals, however, because they cannot tolerate most of what they are given, and can even become ill from it.

daily feeding

You can accompany the keepers on their daily feeding round from March to October (at 2.30 p.m. every day except Fridays, meeting point at the stone monkey).
