Sustainable Urban Development
Freiburg has great momentum for growth as an attractive place to live and work. However, the city also faces new challenges with this positive growth. The massive demand for affordable housing requires – beyond inner-city development – the construction of a new residential district for around 10,000 people.
Currently two sites – Dietenbach und St. Georgen West – are being considered for their suitability and urban land-use plans are in preparation as part of a careful planning exercise. The entire process is being coordinated by the newly established urban planning „Dietenbach Project Group“.
The construction of the new district is expected to commence in 2020. Freiburg is again raising the benchmark in terms of sustainable urban development with the much-publicised construction of the districts of Vauban and Rieselfeld, taking into account social aspects, energy-efficient design and high-quality open space design.
