Experiencing sustainability

Trade fairs and conferences

Freiburg: the Meeting Place for International Environmental Industries

A wealth of trade fairs and conferences on environmental issues are testament to Freiburg‘s solar and environmental expertise. Since it was launched in 2000, Intersolar has become the leading trade fair for the European solar technology sector. After eight successful years, Intersolar regrettably had to bid farewell to Freiburg to find more space elsewhere and now attracts over 50,000 visitors and 1,300 exhibitors to Munich.

Intersolar is now a fixture on other continents as well: with its accompanying conference, it now offers a first-class venue in SanFrancisco, Mumbai, Beijing and Sao Paulo, bringing together companies, technologies, and especially people from the major global markets. From 2014 on, Intersolar will be expanding its services with Intersolar Summits in the U.S., South America and India, offering companies new access routes to emerging growth markets.

Apart from its role as organiser, the City of Freiburg is also represented as a Green City at trade fairs, showcasing sustainable plans and projects on its exhibition stand, at Green Cities conference sessions and in exchanges with local business promoters and companies. A large number of events are also held in Freiburg itself: Gebäude.Energie.Technik (GETEC) is the leading trade fair for energy-efficient modernisation, renovation and construction, the „Congress for Energy-autonomous Municipalities“ provides a platform for discussions about the challenges and opportunities of local alternative energy systems and the Solar Summit is the annual meeting point for the international solar community, attended by leading players from the worlds of science, industry and politics.

A further industry congress on renewable energy and energyefficiency has been held in Freiburg since 2007: Local Renewables Freiburg, hosted by the City of Freiburg and ICLEI, the international alliance of local authorities (Local Governments for Sustainability). The congress provides an opportunity for exchanges on research, development and the practical application of renewable energies. Since 2012, at the invitation of the European Environment Foundation, over one hundred laureates of renowned environmental prizes from over 40 nations have met in Freiburg at the „International Convention of Environmental Laureates“, to discuss projects and build networks.
