Traffic Prevention

The primary aim of Freiburg‘s transport policy is the prevention of traffic by the creation of a compact city that people can cross quickly, with strong neighbourhood centres, urban development along the main public transport arteries and priority for inner-city development rather than suburban growth.
The major urban development decisions adhere to the concept of preventative traffic avoidance: from the construction of the new urban districts of Vauban and Rieselfeld, both of which have excellent connections to the tram system, to the expansion of city-centre university sites and the markets and centres plan, which gives preference to basic provision in the neighbourhood ahead of Freiburg Transport Plans supermarkets on greenfield sites.
