Soil conservation

The 2004 Soil Status Report for the Freiburg region documented contaminated sites and existing pollution of the soil and groundwater – and recommended precautionary measures, hazard prevention and land reclamation. To date, around 1,800 cases of land contamination have been registered and systematically evaluated by the Environment Protection Agency since 1991 and, where necessary, safeguarded and reclaimed. This data helps land owners and planners to identify and take note of risks to humans and the environment at an early stage.

It also means that new and harmful changes to the soil caused by acidification, sealing (with hard impervious surfaces), erosion and land use can be counteracted. Today, 5% of the city‘s woodland on the steep slopes of the Schauinsland are designated as protected woodland to help prevent soil erosion.
