Handle with care – Sensitive Objects of the Ethnological Collection

Museum Natur und Mensch

Looted colonial art and provenance research: ethnological museums have come under critical scrutiny from the public more than ever in recent years. But why are their object so “sensitive”? The term incorporates many aspects: How did the exhibits get into the collection? Who did they originally belong to? What is their culture-specific significance? And how should we deal with them today? “Handle with care” explores the ethical and practical issues that Freiburg’s Museum Natur und Mensch is dealing with and thereby supplements the exhibition in the Augustinermuseum.
