Love thy neighbour - as thyself? But don't tear the fence down just yet... Or is there, as the Alsatian publisher Martin Graff once put it, "no trace of love"? The 2012 Grand State Exhibit takes you on a journey through time across two centuries of sometimes painful, sometimes wonderful, but always intense relations between the neighbours in the region where the borders of Germany, Switzerland, and France meet.

This trip is about official and unofficial alliances, about flight and expulsion, about ostensible ancestral enmity and sometimes forced friendship as well, and about admiration, and dependence. How have these neighbouring countries influenced each other, what do borders and overcoming them mean for each one's identity? This exhibit will attempt to answer these questions with the help of a great many moving stories.
