School
Registration for school
Education is compulsory in Germany. This means that all children between the age of 6 and 18 have to attend a school for at least 9 years. Children of refugees are obligated to go to school no later than 6 months after their arrival in Germany.
School attendance is free. Your child's education starts with a four-year term in a primary school. Then - usually at the age of 10 - your child will move on to a secondary school such as a secondary technical school (Werkrealschule), intermediate secondary school (Realschule), comprehensive school (Gemeinschaftsschule) or a grammar school (Gymnasium).

- Children between the ages of 6 and 10 are registered at a primary school of the school district in which you reside. Here is a map showing the boundaries of the school districts
- Children and adolescents can freely choose a secondary school after completing primary school.
- Your child should be with you when you register him or her for school.
For refugees:
If your child will be attending school, you should first contact your Social Service Centre.
Children with little or no knowledge of German
If your child has no knowledge or not enough knowledge of German to participate in regular classes, it can attend a preparatory class.
If you enrol your child in primary school, please contact the primary school in question. They can give you information about which preparatory class your child may attend. For refugees: please enlist the help of your Social Service Centre to contact the primary school in question.
The central registration office for students between the age of 10 and 16 who no longer visit a primary school is at Karlschule, and that for students between the age of 16 and 18 at Max-Weber-Schule. Please go to these registration points to discuss which school your child will attend in Freiburg. Generally, your child's knowledge of German is assessed on this occasion. Then your child will be assigned to a secondary school in Freiburg where your child will attend a preparatory class. The lessons in the preparatory classes include German, mathematics and English. Depending on the learning progress, your child will then attend regular classes at the appropriate secondary school.
Young people between the ages of 15 and 25, who have already completed their compulsory education but still have no school-leaving certificate, can take preparatory classes with or without remedial German lessons. They register for these classes at the International School in Römerhof.
